Meet Damian...

Damian McGrath is an acclaimed rugby coach, renowned author, and inspiring keynote speaker. With a distinguished career that spans across continents and diverse teams, his journey is not just about rugby, but a testament to resilience, leadership, and the pursuit of success against all odds.

Damian's Time In Rugby...

His experience extends beyond the rugby field, having coached at four Commonwealth Games and four World Cups.

Damian holds the unique distinction of being one of only three coaches globally to have won a World Series title with two different countries. His coaching prowess has been showcased from the vibrant plains of Africa to the bustling cities of Europe, the diverse landscapes of Asia, and the expansive coasts of North America. Among his numerous achievements, leading Canada to its first and only success on the World Rugby Sevens Series stage holds a special place. Damian’s strategic acumen, ability to inspire, and relentless drive were instrumental in this historic victory.

Notably, Damian led Great Britain students to a gold medal victory at the World Student Games in Brazil in 2014 and England to a silver medal at the Junior Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2005. But Damian’s contributions to rugby don’t stop at coaching. He has penned four coaching books and various teaching aids, spreading his knowledge and passion for the sport far and wide. As a keynote speaker, Damian brings the same dedication and expertise that made him a successful rugby coach. His talks are not just about sport, but about teamwork, leadership, dealing with adversity, and achieving success, making him a valuable addition to any event.

The Curious Mindset
Our session with Damian was a masterclass on leading teams in diverse cultures, a task full of complexities that can initially seem to hinder high performance. At the core of Damian's message was the idea that Cultural Intelligence is a key skill for leaders, and indeed, everyone within a high-performing team.

The biggest lessons are the often forgotten basic fundamentals in life, the importance of saying please & thank you, being honest, giving of your time, taking an interest in others & sharing any success you may be lucky to have along the way. So Damian, you’ll have to throw the ‘imposter syndrome’ in the bin! You’ve written a brilliantly engaging, thought provoking & inspiring book.

I've been running BC Rugby News for almost 20 years, I've seen the offshore experts come and go, but l've never seen anyone "get it" as quickly as Damian and adapt to the reality of rugby in Canada. It's a theme he mentions early on when discussing how to be a successful coach or leader, "the guiding principles are all there but unless you adapt them to the circumstances you find yourself in, they are meaningless".
